born in Medina County Ohio 4-16-1837; he came to Calumet County in 1851 and went to farming in the town of Chilton; he enlisted in 1861 in the 4th Wis V.I.; was mustered out in 1864 and returned to Chilton but in 1865 sold his farm and began the study of medicine with Dr. LaCounte; he attended the Chicago Medical College in 1867-8 and 1868-9 and then returned to Stockbridge and began practice; he opened a drug store in 1874 and sold it in 1880; in 1856 he married Miss Jennie Thompson of Stockbridge; they have five boys - Fred, William, Frank D., Charles W., John E. and Park E.; Dr. Merrill belongs to the IOOF and is a member of the Baptist Church
