Henry Esch
Title
Description
General Merchant
This gentleman is an illustration of what can be accomplished by careful attention to business. He was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1853 and 3 years later to this city. In 1858, only 5 years after his arrival, he began business for himself in a small and unpretentious way. The business has grown each year and up to 3 years ago occupied several frame buildings on the site of the present magnification block. This was built at the time. It is 50x115 ft in size, two stories and basement high, brick with stone finishings. The interior is fitted out in a thoroughly metropolitan manner and presents one of the most inviting stores that we have ever seen in our travels. The stock in general; clothing, dry goods, groceries, farm produce, etc. It is divided into departments, each presided over by a competent head and all is under the supervision of Mr Esch himself, who controls his affairs with as much vigor and energy as he did 40 years ago. Personally he is one of the most prominent men in the city and takes an active and working interest in religious matters. Associated with him are his sons Henry, William, Charles, and Godfrey, each of whom has charge of some department of the business. They are all young men of more than ordinary business ability and their connection with it means a perpetuation of its prosperity and good name. As one of the city's great mercantile houses, we are pleased to compliment its founder on his splendid success.
